Weekly Themes

Came Curiouser is designed provide 9-13 year-old campers with fun, hands-on investigations of the natural world and foodways in Southeast Michigan.  While campers who complete morning and afternoon sessions for the four weeks will have a much deeper understanding of these topics, each week’s morning and afternoon sessions are designed as a stand-alone investigations, so families can choose the number of sessions that best fit their schedule!


Week One: July 3-7

Week One Morning

Theme: Ecology- Where do we live?

This week’s focus is examining who we are and the place we live.

Highlights of this week include:

  • Ecology-Examining Biomes at Robin Hills 
  • Lab- Soil Profile and Analysis
  • Projects- Vermiculture and Compost Boxes, Mushroom Logs

Theme: Identify

This week’s focus is plant parts and how to identify and use them.

Highlights of this week include:

  • Botanical Plant Drawing
  • Lab- Plant Part Identification
  • Food- Using Plant Parts in the Kitchen

Week Two: July 10-14

Week Two Morning

Theme: Trees and Eco Services- Why are Trees So Important?

This week is all about trees and the positive benefits they provide to ecosystems and people.

Highlights of this week include:

  • Ecology- Tree Identification, using iNaturalist to become citizen scientists.
  • Lab- Dendrochronology
  • Project- Fairy/Woodland Dweller Doors
  • Food- Tree syrups, Root Beers
  • Daily Games

Theme: Ferment

What do chocolate, bread, and sauerkraut have in common? This week is about the wild world of fermentation!

Highlights of this week include:

  • Investigation of cacao and chocolate making
  • Lab- Wild yeast/Sourdough starter
  • Food- Bread making and Brining
  • Daily Games

Theme: Plants

This week we will look at what it means to live in agricultural zone 6A and the local foods available to us.

  • Ecology- Native Plants and Growing Regions, Foraging food

  • Project- Mini Kitchen Gardens

Theme: Preserve 

How do we survive when no food is growing? This week we learn about how we preserve food!

Theme: Seeds

How do plants store their energy so they/we can start growing again next season?

  • Project- Heirloom Seed Saving

How do we use the energy in seeds to feed us throughout the year?

  • Lab- Sprouting Seeds- alfalfa and bean
